I like the idea of having a publication’s most premium content (or most current content) remain a cleaner user experience: http://www.digiday.com/publishers/pitchfork-opts-out-of-the-page-view-race/ Not saying the business model pencils out, but leaving the bulk of the ad clutter and high-impact advertising to the archives and site sections is certainly something to consider.
